POSITION:       Laboratory Specialist – Science Labs IT

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is responsible for performing various highly skilled specialized tasks in the operation and maintenance needs of the science laboratories relating to but not limited to installing and managing networking systems, integrated computer equipment, instrumentation, and multimedia. The typical duties and responsibilities may include the following; oversee the operating environment of the science laboratories with primary responsibilities in the evening and on the weekend; install and manage computer and related networking systems; troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on printers, plotters, monitors, disk drives and keyboards; identify and resolve problems related to communication networks; install and maintain a variety of hardware and software; test and implement software solutions; evaluate computer operating systems; provide general instructional procedures dealing with the use of integrated computer equipment, instrument, and multimedia systems on a variety of laboratory and course related matters to staff, faculty and students; ensure staff, faculty and student compliance with science laboratory OSHA safety policies and procedures; prepare and set up equipment and instrumentation for classroom demonstrations; construct special projects as requested; receive, assemble and test new equipment; provide or coordinate staff, faculty and student training, work with employees to correct deficiencies; respond to inquires and requests for information dealing with new technologies; assist other campus departments with system maintenance; secure,  monitor and authorize access to laboratory and equipment areas; plan, design, coordinate and recommend facility changes and equipment needs, including researching new products and technology, working with outside vendors and recommending purchases; oversee inventory of supplies, equipment and other materials used with the science laboratory computers, software, and peripherals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: Operational characteristics of computers and related peripheral equipment and instrumentation integrated to computers in the science laboratories; principles of computer systems, installation, analysis and design; principles of computer networking data communications. Basic laboratory techniques related to computers; mechanical function, installation, maintenance and repair needs of computers, networks, servers and peripherals; computer technology and basic programming principles; installation of current software packages and their application. Principles and practices of supervision and training of assigned staff; operation and use of integrated computer science laboratory apparatus, equipment and multimedia in order to set-up demonstrations, exercises and experiments for staff, faculty, and students.  Procedures, practices and techniques used in a science laboratory, including safe work practices and the handling and disposal of environmental hazardous waste. Principles and practices of basic record keeping and inventory maintenance. 

Ability to: Perform required maintenance and repairs on science laboratory equipment computers.  Incorporate instructional techniques in student and faculty interaction and development of support materials.  Identify and revise hazardous waste procedures.  Use personal computer software applications to prepare reports and databases using applications such as word processing, spreadsheets and graphics.  Learn, interpret and apply college and departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations.  Provide instructions to staff and faculty on matters related to the operation of the science laboratory integrated computer equipment, instrumentation and multimedia.  Demonstrate correct computer usage methods, practices, and techniques.  Supervise assigned staff including monitoring, evaluating, training and scheduling; problem-solve, prioritize work and multi-task.  Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including all groups within a diverse, multicultural community.

Experience, Education and Licensing: Bachelor’s Degree in related field or an Associate’s Degree and two years lab experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Physical Requirements:  Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions, as well as exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.  Incumbents may be subjected to dusts, gases, chemicals and travel.

OTHER INFORMATION: A flexible schedule will apply to this position. Based upon the operational hours for the Science Laboratories, the current schedule is 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm Tuesday through Friday and 8:15 am to 4:45 pm on Saturday.  A shift differential may apply to some of the hours worked under this schedule.
